Identity Verification with Mobile Driver’s License

Mobile driver’s licenses offer faster processing than camera-based document capture, cryptographic assurance from the issuing authority, and selective disclosure of only the attributes a relying party needs, making them desirable tools for both businesses and their customers. Organizations that want to accept mobile driver’s licenses (mDLs) in their identity and age verification workflows, however, face technical requirements that go beyond standard document scanning.

The verification engine must:

  • handle the ISO/IEC 18013-5 engagement protocol
  • validate the issuer’s cryptographic signature against the issuing authority’s trust infrastructure
  • process the selectively disclosed attributes into the downstream workflow

The workflow must also gracefully handle users who do not yet carry an mDL, since adoption is an ongoing rollout rather than a completed transition.

Daon supports mobile driver’s license (mDL) identity and age verification through the document verification portion of the identity verification workflow. mDLs presented over ISO/IEC 18013-5 have the issuer’s cryptographic signature validated against the trust framework, and the attributes approved by the user are extracted directly into the identity or age verification workflow. The capability is available as a first-class input in document options, alongside passport, national ID, driver’s license, and NFC-enabled document capture.

For identity verification workflows, the mDL provides a cryptographically signed identity record straight from the issuing authority, replacing an NFC or camera-based document scan. The verified attributes feed the same downstream KYC, KYB, KYE, and compliance processes that any identity verification feeds, with the same audit trail.

For age verification workflows, mDL selective disclosure of the age attribute is supported, allowing a user to prove they are over a threshold age without sharing name, address, date of birth, or any other identity data. This is especially valuable for low-risk age-gated access where a full identity disclosure would be disproportionate.

For users who do not have an mDL, standard physical, or NFC-enabled document capture, keeping the workflow available to every user regardless of which credentials they carry.
