Daon Among First to Achieve eIDAS 2.0 Certification for High-Assurance EU Digital Identity Verification
Certification strengthens Daon’s role in delivering secure, standards-based identity verification across all applications, including digital wallets.
Dublin, IRL – November 4, 2025 – Daon®, The Digital Identity Trust Company, is among the first providers to earn certification under the new eIDAS 2.0 framework – a milestone that puts it near the forefront of the EU’s next-generation digital identity ecosystem.
The shift toward portable digital identity is already accelerating. Gartner predicts that by 2026, at least 500 million smartphone users will regularly utilize a digital identity wallet to make verified claims about who they are. Much of that growth will take place in Europe, where the EU’s eIDAS 2.0 regulation requires every Member State to offer citizens at least one secure, government-approved digital identity wallet by the end of 2026. These wallets will allow people to share verified attributes – such as proof of age, identity, or entitlement to services – without submitting physical identity documents or exposing unnecessary personal data, enabling smoother verification for activities like banking, travel, and access to government services.
European digital identity wallets and trust services must conform to the rigorous security, privacy, and interoperability standards currently being laid out by bodies including the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), ensuring they can deliver low-friction, high-assurance user experiences built on a consistent foundation of trust.
Daon’s certification – issued by an independent and EU-accredited eIDAS Conformance Assessment Body – covers ETSI’s latest identity proofing requirements (version 2.1.1, released in February 2025) at the Extended (High) level. The updated specification defines detailed policy, security, and process controls for document and biometric verification at the levels required for high-assurance use cases. It also requires stronger defences against modern attack vectors such as biometric presentation and injection attacks – areas in which Daon has built a proven reputation for advanced liveness detection, deepfake resistance, and image-integrity protection.
