Daon’s palm-based biometric solution provides a more robust solution than single-print authentication as it contains a larger skin area with additional information, providing greater accuracy.

How palm recognition works

Palm recognition algorithms use matching techniques to fingerprint biometrics, focusing on skin ridgeline details and relative positioning.

Palm Recognition Advances

Using the front or back camera contactless images of the palm are captured and matched against an enrolment palm image from the same device. Contactless palm algorithms use machine learning and neural networks to detect the repeatable texture features and prominent crease lines on a palm image.

Considerations for palm based authentication systems include:

  • Ensuring the correct position of the hand - keeping it the right distance from the camera, outstretched and parallel to the smartphone.
  • Ensuring adequate lighting - with no shadows obscuring features of the palm.
  • Segmenting the palm from the background - especially where that background shares similar colors to the palm.
