ANSI INCITS M1
The International Committee for Information Technology Standards (INCITS) is the major standards organization in the US responsible for the development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) standards. INCITS was originally founded as the Accredited Standards Committee X3 in 1961, and operates under the rules of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Over 1,700 companies and organizations participate in INCITS, which is headquartered in Washington DC.
M1 is the INCITS technical committee working on biometrics, established in November 2001. Its mission is to ensure the rapid development and approval of formal US and international generic biometric standards for purposes such as prevention of identity theft, homeland security, and other government and commercial biometric applications.
M1 is the US Technical Advisory Group (TAG) for international standards development, carried out by JTC1/SC37. There are currently six task groups in INCITS M1, which have similar scope to the corresponding six working groups of SC37. In addition, there are M1 Ad Hoc Groups (AHGs) which focus on additional areas of interest such as multi-biometric systems, and assessing conformance to biometric standards.
INCITS M1 defines biometric standards for the US, many of which have similar, but not identical, international versions, defined by JTC1/SC37. The INCITS standards are typically finalized significantly faster than the SC37 standards which require international agreement from all participating countries.
Daon is a participating member of ANSI INCITS M1.
